Frequently Asked Questions:

  • The Washington State Leadership Board (WSLB) is a trustee agency of Washington State that specializes in delivering equitable leadership development programs.

Our theory of change is this: To change the world, we need to start by empowering young leaders.

  • The WSLB defines priority populations in the same way as the term "underrepresented populations" as outlined in RCW 43.18A.010. We use the term "priority" because these are the groups that the WSLB focuses on when evaluating applications and improving program curriculum across all of its programs.

  • All programs focus on leadership development and secondary pathways, but each program explores a specific leadership style. Whether your student is interested in leading with heart or leading the world globally, we have a program that will help build them into tomorrow’s leaders.

  • The WSLB is a remote-based agency that serves all areas of Washington State.

  • All WSLB programs are administered at no cost to participants. When joining the program, guardians are encouraged to provide their participants with some pocket money for souvenirs during excursions, though this is not mandatory.

  • Each program has specific application requirements, including factors like age, grade, and class criteria. However, our programs welcome anyone who meets these requirements, including those who may be homeschooled.

  • Each program has specific requirements, but the general program lengths are as follows:

    • Washington World Fellows: 2.5 years, starting in your sophomore year.

    • Compassion Scholars: 1.5 years, which can be completed during any year of high school.

    • Boundless Washington: 1 year, starting from the date you receive sports funding.
